Jesus would preach to a group of people, they would listen and then go and tell their friends and family about the wonderful lesson or sermon they heard. Information was passed word of mouth. They were instrumental in spreading the word of Jesus all around the holy land.
Now fast forward 2,000 years. We are in the age of global communications, email, and social media. Data races around the world at the speed of light. An email can go from the US to Europe within seconds.
Katy Perry, who is a pop star, has over 71,000,000 followers on Twitter. Whenever she sends out a tweet (which is tech lingo for a message) it instantly goes to all those people. Within seconds 71,000,000 people all over the world are reading what Katy Perry has to share from their computers, phones, and mobile devices. Almost in real time!
Think about that for a moment. Think of the power that Katy Perry wields with her twitter account. She has the forum to share her likes, her dislikes with so many people. Then think about if only half of them shared her message with all their friends.. So 35,000,000 people retweet her message. (retweet is technical lingo for forwarding a tweet(message))
To put 71,000,000 in perspective. That is more people than 214 countries! If you look at this website (http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/) you can see it is sorted by population. 71,000,000 is more than Congo ranked at 19.
This is a big deal! Social media is Global, it is real time, and it is very powerful! The ability to share your thoughts and feelings with anyone, anywhere. I make posts on my Facebook account and within seconds my mother in The Netherlands is seeing pictures and text halfway around the world!
Has that sunk in yet? Do you grasp the power of social media? The ability to share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences?
So changing gears, from Katy Perry to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Shippensburg. Now, we don’t have 71,000,000 followers on Facebook or Twitter. We have slightly less. So what am I getting at? I wanted to illustrate the power of social media. I think a lot of us take it for granted. I remember the days of mailing a letter to a friend in California and it taking weeks to hear something back.
There is a saying, “You may be the only Bible someone reads.” With that in Mind I added the below box on to the web site.

When you read one of the sermons online, or a news post. You now have the ability to share that piece of information. Please visit the Website and share the word to your friends and family. “Like” our Facebook site, and Share the posts with your friends and families. YOU may be the only Bible someone reads. Your post MAY turn someone back to God. To get them back into Church. Maybe it will help brighten their day? How great would that be?
God Bless,
Mike
